Hey everyone, I just stumbled across this thread and was so touched by all of your stories, so I thought I'd share mine.
I got engaged in August of last year, so here is the story I copied and pasted from my livejournal:
My boyfriend's actual 30th birthday was last Sunday, the 13th (August 2006). I worked until 6pm, but after we went to Friday's with our Norwegian friend and his girlfriend. That was so much fun. The waiters were awesome and kept coming out one by one and tying balloons on Irwin's arms, legs, everywhere. Then they all came out and screamed to the whole restaurant that we had a birthday at our table and made everyone sing the birthday army chant they had. It was a hysterically funny amazing night. Got the birthday boy drunk so I had to drive his stick shift home lol. That was a funny experience alright, but we made it home in one piece.
So anyways fast forward to Tuesday August 15th. We woke up super early and dropped the doggies off at the kennel *tear* and started the 4 hour trek to Miami/Key Biscayne to celebrate what I thought was his 30th birthday.

Then after taking a wrong turn through some interesting parts of downtown Miami, we ended up at our island paradise.

The security booth. Security was amazing, we ordered Chinese one night to be delivered to our hotel room and security escorted the poor Chinese man all the way to our room and out. I felt bad for him

I had my own tricks up my sleeve so I arranged with concierge before we got there to deliver a special surprise for Irwin's 30th birthday so they delivered this delicious mousse chocolate cake and sweet card to the room

After exploring the hotel for a little longer we went out to South Beach and walked around for a little bit.
Back at our hotel balcony, the sun was setting and the boyfriend was getting increasingly nervous unknownst to me who was completely clueless!

I unfortunately do not have any pictures of the proposal so here is how it went down.
~~~~~~~~THE PROPOSAL~~~~~~~
We ordered Chinese and ate out on the balcony like he kept insisting we do all evening. I wasn't suspicious AT ALL. Even though before the trip I thought this would be the perfect trip to propose, I really didn't think he would and I forgot about it when I was there. So we ate our delicious dinner and I finished before him so I went to the bathroom to take off my makeup. (ugh so I looked gross and he still proposed, points to the fiance! lol). I came back and tried to sit on his lap but he pushed me off of him so I was really confused. I was standing in front of him with a puzzled look on my face when he said "I bet you never thought this would happen" or something to that effect, my brain went all fuzzy. Then before I knew what was happening he was down on one knee with a box propped open and simply said "will you marry me". I of course was like #$#@ omg what are you asking me? Oh my god. Lol I really think my brain turned to mush. It came out of nowhere and you never expect something like that when it actually happens. But I of course said yes and we celebrated by watching Miami Ink on tv then went for a midnight swim :) It was perfect. I was super overwhelmed in a good way and then once the shock was over I've been estatic ever since! The ring is perfect. It's a heart shape white gold diamond ring. Just my style.

Little did I know this was a "project ring" and he had plans to add things and make upgrades every holiday until he was done with what he envisioned.
I would have been happy with it just the way it was, but he insisted on completing his vision.
We are getting married in January of 08, so a little over 7 months left. I'm so excited!
