this may seem kinda mean but one of my friends told me if we'd rather have cash gifts then not to register for a ton of things we dont really need b/c then most people will give us checks instead and the average check will be 150-200 bucks so it'll help recoup what we pay for the reception that way. that seems like a lot to me. i havent been to many weddings so i dont know anything about how much to give in cash, but did most of you end up getting that much from people?

I am italian... and at my sisters wedding there were italiens, french and english people... and yes they give money. For her wedding she received at least 100$ which generally should be the case for an italian wedding which costs over 100 per plate.
Depending on how much you reception is costing you....
you can pass the word around that money is what you prefer as a gift!
Good luck

people like our parent's friends, co-workers and some college friends gave us money about $20 to $30. Close friends and some family gave about $50-$70. Close family gave around $100-$200. It just depends on who it was and how close we were. Total including the money dance we got about $1000 in money and about 60% of things off our three registries

In our specific case, it was about $50/pp, but of course there were deviations from that. Just don't budget your wedding based on the assumption that people will "cover their plate." While that's what *I* keep in mind when I'm attending a wedding, I know not everyone thinks that way. Wedding gifts are just that, gifts, and they shouldn't be counted on before they are received.

Like folks have said it all various on the people you're inviting. You can't expect to receive so much simply b/c you've invited so many people. There's no set guide to how much should be given, you can only hope that you get a gift, b/c sometimes that doesn't happen either.

We registered for a bunch of crap, but only b/c w just moved into our apartment like the month before our shower and we had NOTHING!! But for our wedding we got about $100 from each family and older relatives gave a little more. So it all depends on your closeness and sometimes the formality of your wedding.

In my family we were taught to figure the cost of feeding guest is between $30 to $50 dollars a head, if not more ... so depending on the person and the number of guest you are bringing (not the menu ... lol) you give them two to three times that amount. Not everyone is like that though ... but it's a range.
Hope that helps!

Since I received mostly registry gifts from my shower, I received almost all cash gifts from my wedding. I would give about 30-50 dollars per person that I bring to a wedding. We received about that range from most guests.

we're chinese and chinese traditions are always cash...never gifts...
thought we had a lot of non-chinese guests at our wedding...about 70% of those guests gave us cash...and they range from east indian, germans, italians...apparently they told us that cash is also what they do back home...so i learn something new!!!

Here is what we did: DH and I were already living together before we got married, and already had most things (i.e. plates, cookware, etc.) But we made up a list anyway for the bridal shower and got probably 80% of the things off the list. It was things we actually needed though, somewhat of an "upgrade" to the things we already had. Then at the reception, people brought a cash gift including those people who were at the shower too. *Generally* people give a shower gift and a wedding gift too. That's if you are having a shower though, I just assumed you were?
Just saying again what other people have already said, most cash gifts are between $50 - $100.
