We both studied the same program in college and graduated together. We had a very small department and we were all able to speak at our department ceremony.
His plan:
His mother gave him her ring to have and give to me. The ring was also his grandmothers, I have known this plan for a while and couldn't have been happier about his ring choice. The ring is pretty old and so it needed to get fixed up. His buddy is a jewelery so he had his friend fix it up and once the ring was in FH's hands he couldn't wait. He was going to go talk with my dad and stepmom the night before graduation. He was then going to have "the talk" with my dad. Then the following day at graduation he was going to propose to me in the middle of his graduation speech.
What really happened:
The night before graduation I called him and invited him to dinner with some other of my family members, he froze and answered yes because he didn't want it to seem weird that he didn't come. The day of graduation he came over my house extra early before we were to leave. He just kind of lurked and seemed really weird. (Apparently he wanted to talk to my dad, who wasn't home). Then at the ceremony my parents were late (Out of the three I have, they were ALL late) so he wasn't able to talk to my dad prior to the ceremony. He didn't ask during his speech. After the ceremony he asked my dad in front of some other members of my family, so it spread like wild fire that he was going to propose. As we were walking to the car my mom and friend were still with us, so I continued to walk to the car. As I was waiting in the car he finally got in, popped his head over, put a ring box in my face and said, "so, will you marry me?" I thought he was kidding, really, I did.
He said he panicked and everyone knew he was going to propose so he didn't want to show up at my family's house without proposing. So he proposed in the car, in the parking garage at our college...How romantic is that? ;) But I was so surprised, and that made it all worth it!
