Hello!
I am having a private ceremony on Christmas Day but we are still having a formal wedding and reception in a few months. I know all about jumping the broom but, are there any other traditions that are African- American that I might be over looking. Some traditions are handed down through families and various regions.

If you know of any that I have missed or overlooked please help me out. Maybe we can help one another. My family is African-American, Blackfoot Indian, Latin, French and Korean. I have ideas comming for everywhere in various cultures but, I want to focus on what I identify with.

Thank you, may God bless you!

Hi there! We're going to be jumping the broom (literally) in a few months as well... that is, if I ever find one that I like/can afford. Besides that, I couldn't think of any other African-American traditions to add to your big day. You could do the "money dance", but I think that's West African in origin. Then there's the bride's prize/hide the shoe thing, but that is Indian. I'll ask around, now I'm curious myself.

BTW, where did you find/buy your broom?

THe grooms cake is also supposed to originate from the South. (I think, don't quote me)

when i got married 15 years ago there was a book my mother got from the book store it was called something like cultural tradition. I'd go to the book store at least you can have a seat and glance at the book before you buy.
