Unity Candle or Wedding Sand?

I witnessed a wedding sand ceremony at a wedding recently and I'm thinking of doing the same thing on my wedding. My colors are emerald and gold, like this:

guys, what do you think? will this work or should i stick with the traditional unity candle?

It's more of a joining of the bride and groom and in some places it is an actually wedding ceremony. my husband has some celtic background so it incorporated his heritage. our ceremony was out side so the candle was definatly out and i like to do things just a little different. i was very pleased with this addition to our ceremony.
