Have to ever asked for a pay rise

I was just wondering how many of you have asked for a pay rise and how did you approach the subject?

I have been in my job for about a year and havent received or asked for a pay rise since i started..

I basically manage the WHOLE office.. There is no one under me.. Just me and the director so I handle everything from emails to payroll..

I dont know what to do.. I had my review this morning and he didnt mention it, so is it up to me to mention it? Really stuck on this..

What would you do?

It is usually apart of your review - depending on who you work for!
I would just speak to the director and say you thought it may have been mentioned in the review - some of the places I have worked for do them seperately to the work review.
Have an amount in mind so that if asked you know exactly what you want.
I work for an agency as a contractor and spoke to them and said I want $5 more per hour but am happy be flexible with that - they came back with $4.05 so was happy with that as I only thought they would come back with a couple of dollars.

Also check out the job ads in the market to see what you could be getting somewhere else so you know you are in the right range.

Hey BernieA.. Checked out all the current jobs and there are positions that are doing way less than I am and are getting 4k - 6k more.. None of them are earning what I am.. All there pay starts at $4,000.00 above mine and they dont do accounts or payroll like i do.. Now what??

I would say that your best bet is to talk to your boss/director and explain to him that you feel that you're not being paid enough for the amount of work that you do. Be very up front and honest about it--tell him that you enjoy working for him (if you do) and mention that other people in your field are making much more than you. Good luck!!

Wish me luck.. Going to approach the subject on my next pay which is when I will be here for a year.. I love this job.. But it doesnt feel right to be doing so much more than the secretaries and getting paid around the same or less.. Mind you I am his very first employee, so maybe he thinks that if i dont mention the pay he doesnt have to...

you should also state why you feel you deserve the pay raise have some soild evidence that he can't knock around (i had a boss i had to fight for a raise with and really had to be prepared with my evidence) have examples of how you have increased revenue etc. and a job description comparison to others getting paid more than you. It might make thing awkard for a bit but once he realises he is in the wrong and you are right (they never want to admit these things) you should be ok....you never know he might be reasonable about the whole thing but better be overprepared than under and lose your chance....oh and on the one year is a good time to do it....it could be like an incentive raise to keep you there...

I just dont understand how people can work and say "its not about the money".. To me its only about the money.. Thats the only reason I work..
